West Nile Virus
Flying and biting insects are a nuisance to every man, woman, and child (and their pets) who love to enjoy the outdoors. But what has been viewed conventionally as a bother has now become a serious and potentially life-threatening dilemma with the onset of mosquito-borne illnesses such as West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis . In 2003, more than 9,800 human West Nile
Virus cases were reported. As of July 2005, human and avian/animal cases of West Nile Virus have been reported in 47 states: including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. (Source: CDC.gov )
The main path of human contamination with West Nile Virus is through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. The virus ultimately gets into the mosquito's salivary glands and when mosquitoes bite, the virus may be injected into humans and animals, where it can multiply and cause debilitating illness. A Continuous Threat
Mosquitoes can lay their eggs in even insignificantly measurable amounts of water, including fish ponds, bird baths, lingering puddles of rain, guttering, catch basins, tree cavities - basically any place that can retain water. The eggs may hatch in less than 3 days, and the entire mosquito life cycle can be completed in 5-10 days. This means that the threat of mosquito-borne illnesses is a continuous threat that must be dealt with to keep your family and pets safe.
